Graham had a rough time giving up his pacifiers but a wise mama once told me that any major change takes three days and she was absolutely right.
Graham continued to refuse any pacifier replacement (like a blanket or stuffed animal) so he was going completely soothing-object-free and the first night it took him two hours to fall asleep. We kept going into his room to soothe him but our presence made him more upset so he finally went to bed after 20 minutes of uninterrupted crying :(
Even at his worst, Graham had never had much difficulty falling asleep, so this was a really sad night for us. The next day, his nap was fine and bedtime took about 40 minutes and by the third night, we were down to one extra hug and comfort after the first attempt to put him to sleep. Each morning he woke up later and later and by the third day, he was right back to his usual wake up time.
It almost seems like now he is going down even easier than he did with the pacifiers. He goes down awake, but he knows how to soothe himself and he usually plays and sings for a while and then just flops down and falls asleep like a big boy. Way to go, Graham, you did it!
Sometimes when he is tired or sad, he still asks for his pa-tata, but we never let the word cross our lips and just say “you said bye bye” and then he moves on to thinking about other things.
I continue to thank my lucky stars every day for our incredibly easygoing little boy. We love you Graham!
I’ve started to make some headway on all the back-posts, but I still have a ways to go. You can check out the posts from my first catch-up installment:
